An exploration in design and personal style
Hats and Hearts
Twist, slide, connect.

Hats and hearts is a board game I designed for a brief I was given this year. Our main goal with this brief was to create a game that utilized laser cutting and kerfing by extension.

Hats and hearts is a game that combines the idea of connect four with the strategy of chess. It is a game that has all its pieces contained within the design of the box, which removed the need for typical board game packaging thus reduces the negative impact on the environment.
Laser Cutting

The biggest hurdle within this project was learning how to create a laser cutting file.I had no previous experience with laser cutting so it was a new experience for me and at first was quite overwhelming. Through our twilight CAD sessions, I slowly learn how to properly use rhino and it becomes a fun and interesting process.

To create the kerfed lid of my box, I had to model my board game to scale within rhino. This was due to the fact that I would have to unroll the curve in order for it to be the correct size when cut. The kerfed pattern I used was incredibly important as well due to the sharp curves towards the edges of the box, I achieved the finished product by having smaller spacing between the lines when the curve was abrupt.
